me gustaron mucho estos cuentos, algunos más que otros pero al final valen muchísimo la pena。 mi favorito fue “Esme, con amor y sordidez” al que no le tocaría ni una coma。

While there was no particular moment that made the hair on my arms raise, the writing was consistently just super high quality。 Salinger had an amazing ability to establish character with a single phrase, described action, or even a simple description of appearance that defined the character completely, yet somehow with depth and irony。 It's a real shame he didn't write more。 "For Esmé – with Love and Squalor" was my favorite story。 While there was no particular moment that made the hair on my arms raise, the writing was consistently just super high quality。 Salinger had an amazing ability to establish character with a single phrase, described action, or even a simple description of appearance that defined the character completely, yet somehow with depth and irony。 It's a real shame he didn't write more。 "For Esmé – with Love and Squalor" was my favorite story。 。。。more

Absolutely stunning! Salinger adroitly juxtaposes the tragic and the comic in these brilliant stories。 The concluding sentence of every story made my hair stand on end, with its unprecedented inversion and ironic subtlety。

I read Catcher in the Rye in High School and I can remember lying to everyone and telling them I thought Holden was obnoxious and the book wasn't all that great。 Honestly, I think I identified with the character more than I cared to admit。 In any case, I never bothered to read anything else by Salinger。 A few weeks ago I picked up Nine Stories on a whim and holy shit Salinger - where have you been all my life? This book comes right out of the gate with the tragic and bizarre A Perfect Day for Bananafish。 A story that surprised me and cut through me in the way stories are supposed to。 It's a perfect short story。 I doubted he could do it again。 I read the second story - Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut - and was immediately put off by the name of the story and the elitist vibe of the characters。 I think a lot of times when reading fiction from the past I expect the stories to be some boring old shit about high class snobriety and their boring feelings about everything, and with this story that's what I was expecting, but once again I underestimated Salinger and he surprised me with a story about invisible friends (not just the invisible friends of children but of adults too)。 These stories were all perfect, and I recognized that but it wasn't until I read For Esmé - With Love and Squalor that I realized just how precious Salinger is。 That one really clicked for me and it was the kind of story where I had to lay down for awhile after reading it because I felt like I had all the wind knocked out of me。 This is a great collection and I think about these stories a lot now and will probably re-read them many times。 Even if you don't like Catcher in the Rye - and it seems like a lot of people don't like it - you'll probably love these stories。 I immediately went out and bought the rest of his books。 That's how good these stories are。 。。。more

The characters are portraited wisely inscrutable, leaving few direct hints for a look, or a glance, at best, of their views。 But the indirectness makes ‘em look smart, and make me feel stupid。 The whole time。 Fact: Dialogue and descriptions are all there is, portraited with truth and vividity and truth and vividity, with a flare of stage direction here and there, with nothing to add, and nothing to be taken away。 No, add and take away? Few can even be that brilliant。

Not at the same level as the master of the form - Raymond Carver - but this is one of the best collections of short stories I've read。 There are nine stories in all, of which 3 or 4 have memorable endings which I believe will stay with me。 Some of the writing feels a little dated (it was written in and of post war America) and there is less ambiguity than in other collections I've read, but many of the 9 either shocked, moved or made me reflect。 Not at the same level as the master of the form - Raymond Carver - but this is one of the best collections of short stories I've read。 There are nine stories in all, of which 3 or 4 have memorable endings which I believe will stay with me。 Some of the writing feels a little dated (it was written in and of post war America) and there is less ambiguity than in other collections I've read, but many of the 9 either shocked, moved or made me reflect。 。。。more

was between 4 stars and 5, but “teddy” put me over the edge。 that, “bananafish” and “esmé” were worth the price of admission。 not a word wasted。 “pretty mouth and my green eyes” was another standout, along with “uncle wiggily。” the rest were fine, yet not as memorable。

Decent collection of short stories from Salinger, with my favourites being "A Perfect Day For Bananafish" and "Teddy"。 In fact, "A Perfect Day For Bananafish" was one of the best short stories I read recently and is a must read for everyone。 Most stories explore interactions between adults and children, loss of innocence, traumatic experiences, and the vapid nature of American upper-class of the 1950s。 Clean, straightforward prose was very easy to read and follow。 Decent collection of short stories from Salinger, with my favourites being "A Perfect Day For Bananafish" and "Teddy"。 In fact, "A Perfect Day For Bananafish" was one of the best short stories I read recently and is a must read for everyone。 Most stories explore interactions between adults and children, loss of innocence, traumatic experiences, and the vapid nature of American upper-class of the 1950s。 Clean, straightforward prose was very easy to read and follow。 。。。more

These are all pretty-much-great stories, but my reaction to them is a little。。。 muted, for some reason。 That is for this collection as a whole, though。 The way Salinger builds settings and demarcates characters with their idiosyncratic bodily tics and choices of words is unparalleled。 His flowery language and purposeful overuse of commas and winding sentences creates this hoity-toity narrative voice that is pretty funny all throughout。 (This is something that Pynchon, from what I've read, homed These are all pretty-much-great stories, but my reaction to them is a little。。。 muted, for some reason。 That is for this collection as a whole, though。 The way Salinger builds settings and demarcates characters with their idiosyncratic bodily tics and choices of words is unparalleled。 His flowery language and purposeful overuse of commas and winding sentences creates this hoity-toity narrative voice that is pretty funny all throughout。 (This is something that Pynchon, from what I've read, homed in on and turned up to 11。) A few of these stories are especially touching, too, while still making you giggle。 I think Salinger is strongest where children are in play, and he strikes an engaging balance of being cute while being funny while being touching when showing relationships between kids and adults。I think one of my complaints about this book is probably a point of strength to other readers: Everything seems to occupy the same world, told by the same, distinct narrative voice。 The families change。 The settings change。 The characters change。 But it all。。。 sounds the same? So there's a Salinger narrative universe, and that's cool, I guess, but it's a little "samey" to me。 I ended up rolling my eyes as I started some of the last stories, because you can only read so many 6-comma sentences in a row before consciously realizing that so many of these sentences do, in fact, contain at least 6 commas。Other than that, I just wasn't all that affected by every single story。 Perhaps the slice of-life thing he does is a little over my head at parts, but after a couple of these, I had to ask: "So what?"Favorites:The Laughing ManFor EsmeTeddy---I realized about halfway through this collection that I *did*, in fact, read this entire collection 5 or 6 or 7 years ago; everything was eerily familiar and, although I eventually gathered that I had previously read each story by the time I was a few pages into it, everything felt basically new, just barely tugging on a distant memory of the overarching setting。 That, in and of itself, was a wild aspect of reading this book。 。。。more

Incredible characterisation achieved in such short stories, masterful。 'Just Before the War With the Eskimos' and 'De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period' I think I can settle on as my favourites, but such rich characters in every story, truly a marvel。 Incredible characterisation achieved in such short stories, masterful。 'Just Before the War With the Eskimos' and 'De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period' I think I can settle on as my favourites, but such rich characters in every story, truly a marvel。 。。。more

Nine stories。 Nine short stories。 This should be quick and easy and pleasurable, right? Well, not exactly。 I expected this book to be something I could read quickly, as I generally like short stories, and this was less than 200 pages long。 But once into it, I found myself having trouble paying attention。 I would read something and have to re-read it。 While the writing itself was quality, the content was just 。。。 boring。 Even subjects that I think I would have otherwise enjoyed ("Teddy" for examp Nine stories。 Nine short stories。 This should be quick and easy and pleasurable, right?

First let me say I hated Catcher in the Rye。 Second, my rating of 5 stars is for the title short story only, and I must admit, I think it was the best short story I’ve ever read in my life。 Sadly the other 3 short stories I read in the compilation did not live up to For Esme, and I chose to not continue further in the anthology。 Please do give Esme your time, it’s only about 50 pages long, but they are 50 wonderful, wonderful pages!

I am not a fan of JD Salinger。 And I have zero memory of seven of the stories of this collection。 But two I them I really loved, one of which I'll talk about a lot and one very briefly。"De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period" is hilariously funny。 I remember laughing out loud when the narrator stated he hated chairs (it's funny in context)。 I loved all the art world in-jokes and allusions。 I have a thing for heroes that like to lie about themselves and build up invented, exaggerated personalities to imp I am not a fan of JD Salinger。 And I have zero memory of seven of the stories of this collection。 But two I them I really loved, one of which I'll talk about a lot and one very briefly。"De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period" is hilariously funny。 I remember laughing out loud when the narrator stated he hated chairs (it's funny in context)。 I loved all the art world in-jokes and allusions。 I have a thing for heroes that like to lie about themselves and build up invented, exaggerated personalities to impress others and themselves (see also the protagonists of Donna Tartt and Vladimir Nabokov)。 The narrator of this story, the nineteen-year old John Smith, renames himself "Jean de Daumier-Smith" and invents a friendship with Picasso and a host of fake artistic accomplishments。 He's egotistical and arrogant and a great lead character。 And I really enjoyed his final discomfiture at the stories conclusion。 Unlike many other serial liars this character actually manages to grow as a person。The other story I enjoyed, "For Esme - with Love and Squalor," is very short and very beautiful。 。。。more
